A LITTLE SOMETHING FO YO SOUL #1!!

Over ten years ago, I was introduced to yoga. I was still living in New York, working at a middle school in Washington Heights and work 12-14 hour days. It was great work but the schedule was BRUTAL. My wise principal at the time had hired a Clinical Social Worker or Counselor for each grade level. Denise (shout out to Denise Munoz) our clinical social worker at the time could see how I was struggling to keep up and how overwhelmed I felt. Lovingly, she invited me to a yoga class.

What was great, is that showing up for yoga required almost ZERO effort! What I mean is, she had worked out an agreement with the PE teacher and the principal to invite her sister Stella (shout out to Stella) a certified professional yoga instructor to facilitate a drop in class each Wednesday on campus.

When I first began, I used to come in... always late 🤪 and scurry to the back of the room so no one could see my ill formed and inexperienced practice. But over time, I came to look forward to this very personal, safe and transparent space. What was even more amazing is that I didn't have to go out of my to attend. I could change clothes in the bathroom and walk down the hall to my yoga class. It meant I didn't need to leave work early or drive someplace when I was already exhausted. It was what I needed, provided for me, just where I needed it.

The Advent of YouTube, TikTok etc has minimized the space between us and some of the tools we can use to care for our souls. Though I haven't been to an in person yoga class in FOREVER, when I recently found myself feeling broken and drained, I reached for an old and faithful remedy... YOGA. In my recent search, I "discovered" the YouTube channel of Black Yogi Nico (linked below).
